Many of the stained glass windows in The Abbey Church are medieval in origin and most come from Winchester Cathedral in England – remnants of Cromwell’s destruction there about four centuries ago. The tour guide was able to relate stories about nearly all the window panels, and one of the few exceptions was the coat of arms pictured here.
Naturally this coat of arms, at bottom left on the pictured stained glass panel, piqued my interest because of the Solar theme – three Suns and a Chevron. The concept of three Suns was well-known among ancient mystics and occultists: the Visible Sun, the Intelligible Sun and the Spiritual Sun. But usually they are either depicted as the rising, setting and midday Suns; or they are shown as on this panel, but with one smiling, one frowning and one straight faced. (These three are each just a little bit different, but all have happy expressions).
